The Cabrillo College women’s water polo team, competing for the first time in two years, beat host Marin 21-17 in its season opener Wednesday.

Seahawks sophomore Belene Rodriguez, a kickback from San Jose State University after shining at Santa Cruz High, led all scorers with 11 goals. Sadie Bigler, a sophomore out of Turlock, had five goals and two assists. Corallyn Moss, a freshman out of Ojai, had three goals and one assist.

First-year associate head coach George Paul Scheppler and his service dog, Posey, became Cabrillo’s first service dog coaching team.

The Seahawks, who have struggled to fill out their team in the past, have 17 players on their roster, including nine from Santa Cruz County.

The Seahawks (1-0) play a pair of games Sept. 22 to open the Bockman Memorial Tournament at Cabrillo. They face Las Positas at 10 a.m., and Cuesta at 1 p.m.

Women’s volleyball

UC Santa Cruz 3, at Occidental 0: Junior middle blocker Kelly Ann Greene had 10 kills and four blocks in the Banana Slugs’ 25-21, 21-11, 25-15 sweep in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

Freshman outside hitter Kate Lau had nine kills and eight digs for UCSC. Freshman setter Sydney May had 21 assists, and senior libero Emily Pasion had 12 digs.

The Banana Slugs (8-3), who dropped out of the AVCA Coaches Polls after going 1-3 over the weekend, next play in the Cal Lutheran Invite in Thousand Oaks. They have two matches Friday, taking on No. 24 La Verne (6-0) at 10 a.m. and No. 1 Juniata (6-0) at 4 p.m.

San Jose City Tournament: Cabrillo posted a pair of sweeps, 25-21, 25-21, 25-16 over Siskiyous, and 25-18, 25-20, 25-16 over host San Jose City, at the San Jose City Tournament on Wednesday.

The Seahawks (4-4) play at San Mateo (2-5) on Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m.

Boys cross country

PCAL Cypress: Kirby sophomore Mason Vergho (20:09.80) took 14th to lead the Griffins at the 5,000-meter PCAL Cypress Division Center Meet No. 1 at Palo Corona Regional Park on Wednesday.

Gonzales junior Giovanni Ochoa (18:14.30) took first out of 42 runners.

PCAL Santa Lucia: Pacific Collegiate senior Spencer Koontz (17:25.00) took first out of 43 runners at the PCAL Santa Lucia Division Center Meet No. 1 at Palo Corona Regional Park on Wednesday.

Ceiba junior Anthony Toriz (20:06.80) took third. PCS junior Booker Wilkins (20:12.40) and freshman teammate Jude Holmlund (20:24.30) rounded out the top five.

Girls cross country

PCAL Cypress: PCS sophomore Lilly Froeming (22:25.00) took first out of 60 runners at the PCAL Cypress Division Center Meet No. 1 at Palo Corona Regional Park on Wednesday.

Freshman teammate Nina Gramkowski (23:51.80) took fifth.
