Women's Water Polo Splits the First Day of the Central Coast Classic

Women's Water Polo opened the first day of the 2023 Central Coast Tournament against a pair of the best teams from the Northern California Region.  The Cougars made quick work of Diablo Valley in the tournament opener, 16-2, as Freshman Sydney Gills netted four goals, while 2022 All-WSC First Teamer Ryan Rascon (pict) and Freshman Leanna Reed each added a "Hat Trick".  In the second game, All-State Driver Chloe Porter opened the scoring against 2022 CCCAA State Final Four participant West Valley, however the Bay Area powerhouse rallied after their slow start and went on a five-goal run to take control of the game.  The Cougars pulled within striking distance several times, but the Vikings always seemed to answer and keep their hosts at bay.  West Valley closed out the game on a 5-1, 4th quarter run to the win, 13-6.  The setback against the Vikings dropped the Cougars to 1-2 on the season.  Porter, after three games, leads the Cougars' offense in goals (7), assists (5), and Fouls Drawn (7), while Freshmen Hannah Kempf and Goalie Aubrie Kirkby Tatro have led the defense.  Kempf has already swiped a team-high five steals, while Kirkby Tatro collected three steals and corralled 21 saves in his first three starts.

Cuesta has two more games scheduled for the second day of their tournament.  They open tomorrow against defending CCCAA State Champion Santa Barbara (10:30) and wrap-up the event against Fresno City (3:10).
