ROCKLIN – The 2025 Cañada College baseball season came to a close with the Colts' 2-0 series loss at Sierra College in the Northern California Regional Playoffs. Cañada ends with a 20-21 overall record.
Game 1: Sierra 8, Cañada 4
The Colts lost to the Wolverines 8-4 on Friday afternoon in a Best of 3 Game Series to kick off the 2025 3C2A NorCal Baseball Regionals.
Trailing 1-0, Cañada took the lead in the top of the 2nd inning after So. CF Carson Vance homered to left field, and Fr. LF Caden Cuccia singled down the right field line, each scoring one run.
In the top of the 8th, with the score 8-2 in favor of Sierra, the Colts scored two more runs. So. 2B Chris Arce hit an RBI single to left field and Fr. 1B Cole Leschak hit a double that scored another run bringing the Colts within 4.
So. RHP Devin Bettencourt began the game for Cañada and lasted 4 innings before being relieved by Fr. RHP Noah Whittaker. Whittaker pitched 3.1 innings, allowed 4H, 1R, 1BB and 4Ks. The closer, So. RHP Gianvito Carriglio, handled the last 2 outs of the game holding Sierra hitless and scoreless.
The Colts Offense was led by Vance and Arce who each collected two hits. Vance had a homer, double and an RBI to end the day. Arce, Leschak, and Cuccia each drove in the remaining runs for Cañada. The Colts Defense turned three double plays in the game and didn't commit a single error. Arce made the most plays with five.
Game 2: Sierra 6, Cañada 5 (11 inn.)
Cañada stayed in the game until the very end, but the Wolverines pulled away in a 6-5, eleven inning heartbreaker on Saturday afternoon. This was the Colts second loss to Sierra College who now advances to the NorCal Super Regionals next weekend while Cañada's season comes to a close.
Cañada got on the board in the bottom of the 1st inning after So. 2B Chris Arce doubled down the left field line, Fr. DH Matthew Lofberg singled down the left field line, and So. CF Carson Vance grounded out, each scoring one run.
Cañada added one run in the 3rd after So. RF Tanner Van Why singled down the right field line.
With 1 out in the bottom of the 9th and Sierra up 5 to 4, So. SS Kyler Bittner hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Vance, who was on third base, tagged up and slid into home scoring the tying run.
Sierra would go on to add a final run in the top of the 11th, but the Colts were unable to score leaving the tying run stranded at third.
Fr. RHP Mateo Rojas stepped on the mound first for Cañada. The starting pitcher gave up seven hits and four runs over six innings, striking out two and walking five. Fr. Ryan Kinoshita came on in relief for 3 innings. The RHP allowed 2 hits, 1 run, 0 walks and had 4 strike outs. Closing out the game was Fr. Noah Whittaker who pitched a hitless scoreless inning.
Lofberg went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Cañada in hits. Arce, Lofberg, Vance, Van Why, and Bittner each drove in one run for the Colts Offense. The Colts Defense turned two double plays in the game.
