San Mateo opens tourney with 4-2 win
An impressive performance in the circle from Nohemi Livingston and timely hitting helped San Mateo knock off Palomar in the opening game of the 2025 3C2A Softball State Championship tournament, 4-2.
SARATOGA, Calif – An impressive performance in the circle from Nohemi Livingston and timely hitting helped San Mateo knock off Palomar in the opening game of the 2025 3C2A Softball State Championship tournament, 4-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Palomar threatened in the second inning with the bases loaded. The SoCal Player of the Year, Breanna Lutz came to the plate with two outs. She ripped a sharp ground ball to the right side, diving and throwing from her knees to get the final out of the inning was Keithleen Gonzalez who made an error earlier in the inning.
San Mateo got on the board first in the bottom of the second. Katie Johnson led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Love Cabanas smacked an RBI single down the left field line, scoring Johnson.
The Bulldogs added to their lead in the fourth with an Ava Mendoza double in the left center gap. Lily Williams, who was pinch running, scored after racing from first to third on a sacrifice bunt an at bat prior. Three pitches and a flyout later, Gonzalez knocked a single to center, bringing home Mendoza.
The Comets closed the gap in the top of the sixth. Lauren Doepping hit a one-out single then her pinch runner, Paige McLeod, advanced to second on an error. Two batters later, Isabella DeFilippis singled home McLeod. The next batter, Gisele Gonzalez grounded a base hit through the six hole, making the score 3-2.
San Mateo bounced back in the sixth. Gonzalez took a Maddie Bedolla pitch the other way to left, driving in her second run of the game and the Bulldogs' fourth.
Palomar put the leadoff runner on base via a single, and one more runner reached before Livingston and the Bulldogs skated out of the inning.
Livingston, dominant all season long, picked up win number 25 on the season behind a two-run, none earned, performance with no walks and three strikeouts.

San Mateo moves on to the winners bracket and will face the winner of Orange Coast and Modesto on Friday, May 16.
Palomar moves to the loser's bracket and will face the same game's loser at San Jose City College on Friday.
