Seahawks use big 2nd quarter to top Modesto in 3rd place tilt

The Cabrillo College Seahawks dug themselves out of a 4-3 1st quarter hole with a 5-2 2nd quarter en route to a 14-11 win over Modesto in the 3C2A 3rd place game Saturday in Novato.

The Pirates (11-13) jumped out to the 4-3 lead behind three goals from Breece Soaras, but the Seahawks (16-5) came alive in the 2nd on a pair of scores from Sadie Bigler and one each from Bella Bynes, CoralynnMoss and Sierra Nielsen for an 8-6 lead at the break.

Cabrillo stayed hot in the 3rd with a pair of scores from Bynes and one from Alaina Peet, as the Seahawks took an 11-7 lead into a classic 4thperiod.

The Pirates fought back with four goals – two from Molly Kendrick, - but Cabrillo put it away with single tallies from Bigler, Bynes and Nielson. Keepers for both teams, Cabrillo's Lucy Fitzgerald and Modesto's Sarah Gould and Sofia Heutmaker, were stellar all night, with Fitzgerald picking up the win and Gould and Heutmaker keeping Cabriilo's leading scorer Belene Rodriguez off the board.

Bigler finished with a game-high five goals, followed by four from Bynes and three from Nielson. Soaras led the Pirates with four scores, while Kendrick, Ava Faria and Trinity Zavala had two each.

Cabrillo reached the 3rd place game with 13-10 win over host College of Marin (15-11) Friday and a hard-fought 11-10 loss against Sierra. In the best game of the weekend, Modesto opened with an 11-10 double OT win over Merced (13-10). The Pirates fell to eventual champion West Valley 16-6 in Saturday's semifinal.
