The West Valley women's water polo team stormed through the Coast Conference Championship Tournament last weekend to claim their fifth consecutive undefeated championship. The Vikings (23-4, 7-0 Coast) now head to the CCCAA NorCal Championships Nov. 11-12 at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton.

West Valley over Marin 16-5

The Vikings raced out to a 7-0 first quarter lead and were never threatened in the tournament opener against College of Marin (6-8, 4-4). Johanna Scheer led the stat sheet with five goals on seven shots, and Kianna Melvin had three goals and a game-high five steals. Aaliyah Lax had three goals, while Gianna Bozzo finished with a pair of scores. Taylor Hendricks posted a goal and four steals, and Gaby Thomas and Hannah Edwards had a goal each. Grace Smith stopped nine Mariner shots to pick up the win in goal. 

West Valley over Merced 18-7

The Vikings and the Blue Devils (17-8, 5-2) were knotted at 5-5 at halftime in the afternoon title tilt. West Valley assumed control after the break, outscoring Merced 4-2 in the third and 9-0 in the fourth.

Lax, Melvin and Scheer each found the back of the cage four times, while Fatima Gonzalez Garcia and Aiyana Mendoza had a pair of goals apiece. Garcia came up with a game-high three steals, followed by Melvin's two. Smith made 13 saves to improve to 13-3. 

All-Coast Conference Team

Kiki Melvin was selected by the Coast coaches as the 2022 Coast Most Valuable Player. WVC coach Erika Vargas was named the Coast Coach of the Year for the fifth straight season. Joining Melvin on the All-Coast Conference 1st Team were Jojo Scheer, Aaliyah Lax and Grace Smith. Tima Garcia, Paige McCroskey and Aiyana Mendoza were All-Coast 2nd Team selections, while Alex Harris and Taylor Hendricks picked up All-Coast Honorable Mention honors.
