The Chabot College baseball team showed Thursday why it is one of the top home-run hitting teams in the state.
In a 9-7 victory over visiting West Valley, the Gladiators pounded five home runs, included three consecutive blows in the eighth inning.
"The ball traveled today," said Chabot's Steven Nice, who slammed two home runs and was 4 for 4 with three RBI. "I tried to use the middle (of the field)."
The wind was blowing out to left-center field, and the Gladiators (16-11, 7-4 Coast Conference-Golden Gate Division) took advantage of that for its first three runs of the game. Nick Hermes led off the bottom of the second inning with a shot over the left-center field fence. Four batters late, Nice smashed a two-run shot in nearly the same location.
An RBI single by Francisco Pedraza gave Chabot a 4-0 lead in the third inning, but West Valley (7-20, 3-8) responded with seven runs in the next three innings to grab the game's momentum.
"We didn't have quality at-bats," said Chabot Associate Head Coach Will Tavis about his team's approach before the late innings. "We got out of our game plan."
In the eighth inning, however, everything came together offensively for Chabot.
Pedraza started the bottom of the eighth with a single, then Adam Hollar ripped a pitch off the left-field fence for a standup double. Justin Mitchell proceeded to slam a 3-2 pitch over the fence in deep center field to tie the score.
But that was just the start of Chabot's home runs that inning. On the very next pitch, Nice slugged a homer over the left field fence. Four pitches later, Hunter Harris slammed a solo home run for a 9-7 Chabot lead.
Chabot relief pitcher Marcus DuBois finished off the game by setting down the Vikings in order in the ninth.
Besides Nice, other Gladiators with multiple hits Thursday included Pedraza (2 for 4, run, RBI), Hollar (2 for 4, 2 runs) and Harris (2 for 3, run, RBI).
The Gladiators have won four games in a row and scored at least six runs in all those games. They have also won five of their past six games, averaging nine runs a game in that six-game span. Chabot will travel to face West Valley on April 1 at 1 p.m.
