Conference Commissioner
The Coast Conference Athletic Association (Coast Conference) invites applications for the position of Commissioner.
The Commissioner provides leadership and advocacy on behalf of the Conference’s member colleges. The Commissioner assists the colleges in meeting the Conference’s Mission and Goals, represents the Conference on statewide issues, and assists the colleges in fostering a culture of compliance with the Constitution and Bylaws of the conference and the California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A).
The duties of the Conference Commissioner shall include, but are not limited to:
Leadership Duties
- Serve as an advocate for the Conference member colleges on statewide issues impacting intercollegiate athletics.
- Serve the member colleges as the leader and primary point of contact on all Conference business with those external to the Conference.
- Lead in the cultivation of conferencewide communication among member colleges’ CEOs and maintain regular contacts with those campus leaders on statewide intercollegiate athletics issues.
- Attend and advocate on behalf of the Conference member colleges at meetings as called by the Conference, 3C2A and other approved agencies.
- Lead the Conference Program Review Process as an advocate for member colleges’ athletic programs.
- Regularly attend Conference Championship events and those 3C2A post-conference events featuring Conference member colleges and student-athletes.
Business Management Duties
- Pursue and manage conferencewide sponsorships, partnerships, naming rights and other revenue generating opportunities, and personnel related to such efforts operating currently or in the future (Conference Treasurer, consultants, interns, etc.).
Athletic Compliance Duties
- Maintain a comprehensive understanding of the Constitutions and Bylaws of the Coast Conference and 3C2A. Review and oversee the maintenance of the Conference Constitution and Sport Supplements to ensure accuracy and relevance.
- Assist member colleges in the application of the rules governing athletics operations including interpretations of sport rulebooks, sports’ supplements and the 3C2A Constitution.
- Serve as an advocate for Conference member colleges with other Commissioners and the 3C2A on all inter-conference and host-conference issues concerning competition and rule interpretations.
Administrative Duties
- Call and manage Conference meetings as prescribed by the Conference Constitution.
- Direct the hiring, and manage the supervision of, the Conference Assignors of Officials in cooperation with the Conference Sports Representatives.
- Maintain eligibility records, e.g., receive and verify forms; maintain all files on completed forms submitted by colleges; report data to the 3C2A upon request; review lists and work with the colleges to make corrections; archival of all records digitally, etc.
- Keep digital archives for the Conference, especially pertaining to the Constitution, Program Review, compliance cases, and on-going Conference procedures.
- Direct the activities of personnel as appointed by the Conference Constitution, including but not limited to the executive board members, Sports information directors, and webmaster.
- Coordinate the work of the sport representatives to maintain seasonal sports continuity, currency of the Conference sports supplements, and the development of the sports schedules.
- Manage all aspects of Conference awards.
- Create and distribute Conference admission passes as per Conference policy.
Minimum Qualifications
- Proven leadership experience in an organization of more than 100 employees.
- Five years professional management experience.
- Five years budget management experience.
- Five years of personnel management experience.
- Knowledge of the requirements of the California Education Code and federal Title IX laws as applicable to intercollegiate athletics.
- Interpersonal skills to relate effectively with diverse constituencies.
- Knowledge of intercollegiate athletics operations and events.
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Management experience in culturally diverse settings.
Desirable Qualifications
- Excellent digital and oral communication skills.
- Experience in revenue generation, sponsorships and partnerships.
- California community college experience.
- Experience as a California community college administrator.
- Master’s degree in a field related to this position.
Salary, Benefits and Employment status
- This position is an at-will, independent contractor of the Coast Conference. It is anticipated that all assignments can be completed as part-time work, averaging approximately 10 hours/week annually.
- The Commissioner will receive compensation of $36,000 annually.
- The Commissioner will manage all other costs related to this position, including but not limited to travel, equipment, supplies, postage, etc. No medical or other benefits are offered for this position.
- In the first year of service, the Commissioner will work under a one-year contract from July 1 through June 30 (12 months). The Commissioner is paid at the end of each month at a rate of $3,000.
- Annual evaluations shall be utilized for both commendations as well as areas of feedback. Evaluation process will be the primary tool for salary adjustments. Salary adjustments shall not occur until after the 3rd contract year.
- After the 3rd consecutive 1-year contract with satisfactory evaluations, the conference will consider a multi-year contract.
- Either party may end the contract by providing a minimum of 90 days’ notice to the other party.
