The Cabrillo College women's water polo team, competing for the first time in two years, beat host Marin 21-17 in its season opener Wednesday.

Seahawks sophomore Belene Rodriguez, a kickback from San Jose State University after shining at Santa Cruz High, led all scorers with 11 goals. Sadie Bigler, a sophomore out of Turlock, had five goals and two assists. Corallyn Moss, a freshman out of Ojai, had three goals and one assist.

First-year associate head coach George Paul Scheppler and his service dog, Posey, became Cabrillo's first service dog coaching team.

The Seahawks, who have struggled to fill out their team in the past, have 17 players on their roster, including nine from Santa Cruz County.

The Seahawks (1-0) play a pair of games Sept. 22 to open the Bockman Memorial Tournament at Cabrillo. They face Las Positas at 10 a.m., and Cuesta at 1 p.m.
